Town of Bedford Inaugurates First Responder Video

By Town of Bedford and Ex Chief Dean W. Pappas
December 4, 2024

At Monday night's Bedford Town Board meeting, the "I Am a Volunteer! Bedford's First Responders" video was officially launched. The video incorporates interviews with various members of Bedford's Volunteer Fire and EMS organizations. The news flash on the Town of Bedford's Website reads:

To raise awareness and help recruit volunteers, the Town of Bedford is proud to introduce its new video: I am a Volunteer! Bedford First Responders. Supported by four dedicated volunteer first responder agencies - the Katonah Fire Department, Bedford Hills Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department and the Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corp - Bedford receives essential, life-saving support to residents. Staffed entirely by volunteers, they serve as a vital cornerstone of the community.

Representing all four agencies, the video was developed through a series of interviews with volunteers who shared their personal motivations for serving, insights into their daily lives and the impactful roles they play in the community. A key takeaway emphasized throughout the video is that that while they may all come from different backgrounds and experiences, every single first responder in these four agencies is a volunteer - a fact that many residents may not realize.

"We are thrilled to spotlight our volunteer first responders and help the community understand how they too could volunteer!" said Supervisor Ellen Calves. "These agencies provide critical services that our residents depend on, and yet they face the same recruitment challenges seen nationwide. This video is a way to express our gratitude, help raise awareness of their vital role, and encourage more volunteerism."

The video launched at the Town Board meeting on December 3, 2024 and will be used by the town and the four agencies to promote awareness. In addition to active promotion through the holiday season, the video will also be used during open-house days, annual events and fundraising campaigns.

The video messages highlight the rewarding nature of this work, the life-saving and "worst-day-of-your-life" support, and the fact that anyone interested can contribute by joining.

"This is the highest level of community service and Bedford is deeply grateful. Thank you to each and every volunteer." added Calves.
