Each year, the Kellogg family, in partnership with the Katonah United Methodist Church, awards scholarships to deserving youth who make quiet contributions to their community, and who are nominated by the organizations in which they serve. The scholarship is named after Donald R. Kellogg, a 50-year member, Ex Chief, and Commissioner of Katonah Fire Department who was very involved in the Katonah Community. This year's recipient is KFD Firefighter Devin Braun, who has been a dedicated, active member of Katonah Fire Department for several years now, and has consistently shown a commitment to both the department, and by extension, the Katonah community, through his attendance at fire calls, meetings, and drills. Additionally, he has carved wooden door wedges, leaving them in a bucket in the firehouse for any member to take. Devin also serves as the engineer for Tanker 6, which entails making sure the apparatus is always fully operational for any task. In addition to volunteering for the fire department, Devin has volunteered at the Katonah Public Library with the maintenance staff and has also helped coach at Rising Stars, an alternative athletic program for developmentally disabled children in the Katonah-Lewisboro School District. He will be graduating from John Jay High School this spring. He also works part time at Kelloggs and Lawrence Hardware Store and Mt. Kisco Auto, and he has been interning at the Valhalla Emergency Training Center for the last two semesters. Devin will attend InclusiveU at Syracuse University, a four-year academic program for students with intellectual disabilities. Devin will choose a field of study (similar to a major) and earn a certificate in that field upon graduating from the program. He is considering a focus on business. He plans to intern with the Syracuse Fire Department while at school. |
