Donated Cars Put to the Torch

By Ex Chief Dean W. Pappas
April 2, 2019

One of the great things about training with donated vehicles is that we get to train on them multiple times. After a recent Saturday drill with KBHVAC, where we trained on motor vehicle accident stabilization and extrication, KFD members on Monday night were able to use the same vehicles for vehicle fire training. Vehicle fires present many different hazards for both responders and civilians. For example, engine components made of magnesium burn at incredibly high temperatures. Tires and fuel tanks can explode unexpectedly. Super heated hatchback pistons can become deadly missiles. And air bags that haven't deployed can suddenly go off. Learning the proper methods for approaching a burning car, getting water or foam on the fire, stabilizing the car, and accessing compartments like the hood and trunk, are essential for safe, effective firefighting operations. We're grateful that we have many generous individuals in town willing to donate their old cars so that we can continually improve our response capabilities.
