By Ex-Chief Dean W. Pappas
September 21, 2018

On Friday afternoon at about 4 p.m., Katonah Fire Department was dispatched to an motor vehicle accident on I-684 at the ramp that merges with the Saw Mill River Parkway. One vehicle hit the rear of a second vehicle, causing that vehicle to overturn and completely block the ramp. Car 2211, Rescue 17 and Engine 115 responded to assist with scene safety and with traffic control. Fortunately, the driver of the overturned vehicle was able to self-extricate. Ambulances from Katonah-Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported two people to Northern Westchester Hospital. I-684 South was shut down temporarily while tow trucks dealt with the two vehicles involved. Northbound traffic, already heavy with home-bound commuters, was slowed down even more as motorists viewed the accident scene. The backups extended down the Saw Mill River Parkway northbound, where it merges with I-684. Katonah FD units were on scene for approximately one hour.
