By Ex-Chief Dean W. Pappas
June 11, 2018

At about 1920 Monday evening, Katonah Fire Department was dispatched to a challenging motor vehicle accident involving a tanker truck that was carrying raw sewage. The truck was making the turn from Route 35 to northbound I-684 when it lost control on the on-ramp and rolled over, with the trailer remaining on its side while the cab landed upright with the driver trapped inside. Working around (and in) the extensive sewage flow, firefighters and EMS crews worked to free the driver. Truck-mounted cutters and spreaders from Rescue 17 and Engine 115 were put to use, along with Rescue 17's portable cutter and spreader. Laboring quickly under adverse conditions, firefighters rolled the top of the cab back and were able to free the driver, who was quickly transported by KBHVAC. Car 2211 also started a spill number due to the sewage spill and Westchester Department of Emergency Services' Haz Mat 1 truck responded to the scene. KFD units were on location through 10 p.m.

Units: Cars 2211, 2212, 2213, Engine 115, Engine 117, Rescue 17, Utility 22, Utility 8, KBHVAC, Westchester DES Haz-Mat 1, NYSP, Bedford PD, County Car 4, NYDOT, NYDEP
