Brush Fire Caused by Unauthorized Camp Fire

By Chief Pappas
June 25, 2016

On Saturday morning, June 25, an individual walking his dogs in the Beaver Dam Sanctuary off Beaver Dam Road noticed heavy smoke emerging from a copse of trees within the preserve and called in a brush fire. Engine 116, MA-15, Tanker 6 and Utility 8 responded and encountered a 25X25-foot brush fire, the result of an unauthorized and poorly extinguished camp fire. MA-15 was able to drive into the sanctuary proper and park at the scene. Firefighters working with rakes, back pack water tanks, and fire extinguishers were then also able to use MA-15's booster line and 250-gallon water tank to attack and extinguish the fire. Tanker 6 and Engine 116 stood by on Beaver Dam Road with additional water. As a precaution, Bedford Hills FD Tanker 5 was put on standby in their quarters. The fire was extinguished in about an hour. With the recent spell of hot weather and no rain, the risk of brush fires is extremely high. Please do not have campfires in prohibited areas like the Beaver Dam sanctuary, nor should you have any kind of fire outside of an approved fire pit or container. It could cause a brush fire that could spread quickly if not noticed in time. Everyone who responded gave a 110 percent effort. Our thanks to Bedford Hills FD for standing by with their tanker.

Units: KFD: Cars 2211, 2212, 2213, E-116, T-6, U-8. BHFD Tanker 5 (stood by in quarters)
